JUNETEENTH 2026 | Mafanikio: Freedom. Progress. Achievement

Join the City of Lake Oswego and the Lake Oswego School District Black Student Unions for a Juneteenth commemoration event with the theme - Mafanikio: Freedom. Progress. Achievement. This year's celebration honors the perseverance of the past while uplifting the accomplishments of today’s students and community. “Mafanikio” (mah-fah-NEE-kee-oh) is a Swahili word meaning “success” or “achievement,” chosen by students to represent the journey from freedom to progress.

This community event is a time to remember the past honestly, celebrate the present joyfully, and shape the future intentionally. The celebration will feature student voices, cultural performances, student artwork, vendor marketplace, food and opportunities to reflect on the continued pursuit of freedom, opportunity, and belonging for all. Join us as we honor the strength, resilience, and achievements of Black communities while uplifting the leadership, creativity, and dreams of the next generation.
