Join Through The Trees Collective and The Bird Alliance of Oregon for an enlightening Black History Month event as we explore Glenn Otto Community Park and the vast cultural history of the surrounding area of Troutdale and the Sandy River Delta - both pre and post the Lewis & Clark era.
This unique gathering will delve into how the local Black history of the area is intricately woven into the fabric of this natural haven and surrounding areas. Our talk will touch on the achievements of York, a Black explorer who was an integral part of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, as well as the often under-discussed narratives of Black Pioneers who came along the Oregon Trail and before.
Following the discussion, participants will be led on a guided nature walk along the park's trails by the knowledgeable Chris Williams - a former National Parks Service Ranger, and current Adult Learning Manager for the Bird Alliance of Oregon.
Our walk will provide an opportunity to connect more with one another and the natural world that surrounds us. The event will culminate in an Ancestral Grounding Circle, honoring the Black community members who have traversed this area before us, and setting intentions to be caretakers of their heritage and the land.
This session is held in partnership with the wonderful folks of The Bird Alliance of Oregon.
